Who We Are

Scodie Deyong. You'll find us listed under "a" for accountants, which is entirely accurate but not the whole story. We like to think that we do more than make the numbers tally and fulfil your legal obligations to the state's coffers.

Our aim is not to be a service provider but your partner.

Ask any of our 800 clients. With each one we are, of course, concerned that the accounting is performed accurately and punctually. But we are more concerned to consider your financial affairs as part of something bigger: your life. Understanding the role that your finances play in your life, and the one you want them to, lets us advise you better.

We call it "big picture" accounting. It's the approach we've taken since we opened our doors over 25 years ago.

Today all 800 of our clients, corporate or individual, reap the benefit of this approach. Each one is looked after by a partner (there are seven of us), and we are assisted by all of our other qualified or qualifying staff.

To make sure we give you the kind of "big picture", pro-active guidance we described above, we keep right up-to-speed with developments in modern accounting practice. You'll find our partners attend courses and make time to study on a regular basis.

The other principle we stick to is that we take our work seriously, but not ourselves. So we hope that you'll always find us warm, friendly and easy to talk to. And in that respect not like accountants at all.

Michael ScodieMICHAEL SCODIE
Michael opened the practice doors in 1975. Under his guiding hand, it's become today's thriving partnership. His areas of expertise cover pensions, investments and compliance. He's also a member of the Institute's Faculty of Taxation. But that's not all. Clients have his unshakeable commitment and loyalty. So that whatever the business climate you have a rock-solid business partner.

Lionel DeyongLIONEL DEYONG
Lionel joined Michael in 1978 and Scodie Deyong was born. Today Lionel schmoozes between our head office in London and the one we (he) runs in Middlesbrough. But whichever side of the Watford gap his clients are, he's become the business shoulder they lean on, letting them down only with his somewhat dubious choice of football team.

Mark JacobsMARK JACOBS
You can talk to this accountant doing 80 on a Triumph Legend, at the top of a glacier or the bottom of a scrum. In return he promises expert advice, just delivered in a most unaccountant-like way. He's been at it for us since 1990, particularly for the massed ranks of 35-50 year-old professionals. Today he's also the partner in charge of inheritance tax. And snowboarding.

David AradDAVID ARAD
David became one of our partners when he joined us in 1995. Before that he had run his own practice. Not only did he bring plenty of clients but also plenty of experience in international business. Today more and more of our clients are making use of this, finding it as much to their liking as David's bowling at our annual cricket match.

Simon SeftonSIMON SEFTON
Simon Sefton joined us in November 2005. He ran his own business in Toronto for 8 years before moving to England and into accountancy in 1988. Simon has wealth of experience in looking after personal service companies, i.e. IR35, and other tax matters relating to foreign ex-pats working in the UK. Using his business, accountancy and tax knowledge and experience Simon provides clients with sound, solid and pragmatic advice. And if you are ever in need of a 5-a-side keeper Simon’s your man.

Matthew JamesMATTHEW JAMES
Matthew qualified in 1996, joined Scodie Deyong as an audit senior in 2000 and in the seven years since then has built up a truly expert knowledge of audit and compliance. His recent appointment as partner means that Matthew now takes the practice lead in everything audit-related. That’s not to say he doesn’t take a little time off. If it’s not audit procedure or practice assurance, it’s music, sport or Middlesbrough FC.

Lydia KuyperLYDIA KUYPER
Lydia is one of our newest partners, and the greater part of her time is spent working on larger businesses, where her client management skills bring order, clarity and focus to in-house accountancy departments. She also heads up our graduate recruitment and under her guiding hand our students have enjoyed unprecedented exam success. Somehow in the midst of all of this, she still finds time to scuba dive and windsurf with similar aplomb.
